The Sports and Recreation Center 2.0 project consists of the reconstruction of the Sports and Recreation Center, including the demolition of the existing obsolete infrastructure, namely the Legion Arena, the adjoining outdoor swimming pool and the North Chalet.
Today, the Honorable Catherine McKenna, Federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, Ms. Isabelle Charest, Provincial Minister for Education and Minister responsible for the Status of Women and Ms. Chantal Rouleau, Provincial Minister responsible for the Metropolis and of the Montreal region announced funding of $ 70 million for multiple recreational and sports infrastructure projects in the Montreal region as part of the Financial Assistance Program for Recreational and Sports Infrastructures (PAFIRS).
The Town of Montreal West received a grant of $ 12,556,727 from the federal and provincial governments as part of the Financial Assistance Program for Recreational and Sports Infrastructures (PAFIRS) for the reconstruction of its Sports and Recreation Center. The PAFIRS aims to support the presence of recreational and sports infrastructures in good condition in all regions of Quebec and to increase access to these infrastructures for the population.
“This financial assistance will allow us to build our city of tomorrow, with an adapted, accessible and sustainable recreational and sports infrastructure. This project has not only become necessary to modernize our sports and community facilities, but it has been demanded for several years by a large number of organizations in our community "
This reconstruction aims to replace the current obsolete infrastructure. As a result, the arena will be rebuilt with standard properties and size to accommodate more sporting activities.
The Town wants the project to be carried out in a spirit of sustainable development and to be resilient to the effects of climate change.
To this end, an integrated design process was carried out in order to present measures promoting eco-responsible and sustainable design. The main objective was to identify synergies between the dimensions of uses, architecture, mechanics, electricity and the building envelope with a view to reducing energy and drinking water consumption while ensuring the proper functioning of the functional and technical program of the building and the comfort of the occupants. All while respecting budgetary constraints.
This project perpetuates the sports and recreational offer in a strategic location. The Town plans to develop a single center of recreational and sports services to promote the to attract all people, young and old. To do this, the Town will integrate the arena, the swimming pool, the classrooms and the physical activity rooms (Yoga, zumba, fitness, ballet, etc.).
The Town offers a diverse program of annual activities. This is growing and demand continues to increase. The Town is dealing with various partners to maximize the accessibility of existing infrastructure.
The population is very tightly woven, which gives a spirit and energy to the activities.
The population and the city together cultivate a real sense of belonging and an enriched experience that emphasizes the participation of citizens and non-residents. Several organizations that revolve around the population are mobilizing to support this project.
"This project is the culmination of remarkable efforts on the part of municipal employees and community organizations that live around us and we are happy today that this project can finally take off for the benefit of our citizens"
The master plan below has been approved but remains subject to change. The City plans to hold consultation meetings with certain key stakeholders who will be identified in the near future and they could thus modify certain elements of this plan.
